On Saturday, July 26, 2003, Carole and Jay Furr got off their lazy butts and, after living in scenic Vermont for FIVE YEARS, finally got around to kayaking one of its scenic, meandering rivers. The Lamoille River, which runs west from the slopes of the Green Mountains down to Lake Champlain, is a pleasant, winding river with not much in the way of rapids... perfect for a kayaking novice like Carole and an almost-novice like Jay. Their trip was handled through Umiak Outfitters of Stowe, Vermont, who picked them up in Jeffersonville, Vermont, drove them four miles northeast along Route 15, and dropped them off with a tandem kayak. Their trip took them 5.8 miles along the Lamoille, under three bridges, and past and among many other kayakers and canoeists. (They had their Garmin eTrex Vista GPS along, recording their path along the river. The chart above shows their trip -- if it seems odd that the trip doesn't follow the blue line of the river in all cases it's because the electronic map is actually not perfect, it's a close approximation of the real terrain, leaving out a lot of the squiggles and meanders. The yellow line created by the GPS, on the other hand, is correct within 17 feet or so.)
