Vermont Maple Open House Weekend 2008

The 7th annual Maple Open House Weekend was held the weekend of March 28-30, 2008.   For once, we (Carole and Jay Furr) didn't have anything else going on and ventured out to tour four local sugarhouses in Chittenden County, Vermont.    We're familiar with the sights and smells and tastes of a sugarhouse, but this was our chance to see some of our local sugarmakers at work and sample their wares up close and personal, rather than waiting until the big Maple Festival in St. Albans, Vermont at the end of April.

Num.  Vermont maple syrup!

Carole sips a syrup sample at Burgess Sugarhouse in Underhill.

Carole happily points to a helpful sign at the Davis Family Farm sugarhouse in Underhill.

Jay inspects the Davis evaporator. (Mr. Lee Davis, Vermont Outstanding Young Sugarmaker 2007, is to his left.)

Jay peers up at the escaping steam as Mr. Davis holds up fingers to indicate a measurement. The size of Jay's brain? Who knows?

Carole samples some fresh-from-the-evaporator syrup at the Davis sugarhouse.

Carole has some yummy Sugar-on-Snow at the Davis sugarhouse.

Still at the Davis sugarhouse, Carole points to a cross-section of a maple trunk showing tapping scars from many years of sap collecting.

In Essex, Joe Jordan explains the fundamentals of sugarmaking to Carole.

At the Jordan sugarhouse, Carole brandishes a 'sugar devil' used in olden times to break up hardened maple sugar in a barrel.

In Westford, Jay checks out the gleaming evaporator at Snow Hill Farm.

At Snow Hill Farm, Carole licks maple icing from her fingers.

We bought some syrup from each sugarhouse -- plus some maple candy and maple cashews -- and brought it all home for our moose, Theo, to enjoy.

Theo proudly shows off all his new maple products!
